Can HPV be detected when you get a pap if you’ve had the shots?

by Rachel on July 25, 2011

When you get a flu shot the virus is in you so you won’t get sick (or as sick) right? So I’m wondering since I’ve had the hpv shots (gardasil) is the hpv virus in me somehow and can be detected through a pap?

The vaccine does not contain a live virus.
The vaccine works by tricking your body into building antibodies to 4 genital HPV types, two low risk HPV types 6 and 11 and two high risk HPV types 16 and 18.

The vaccine prevents these four HPV types…and works best if you have not already been sexually active

A Pap looks for abnormal cell changes….that HPV can cause. The vaccine prevents cells changes from high risk HPV types 16 and 18.

If you have already had sex then you may have already acquired an HPV type.

They are about 15 high risk HPV types…altogether they are 40 genital HPV types….so you Pap may still find abnormal cell changes…due to other HPV types.

Until there is a vaccine that prevents all high risk HPV types…then it is still very important to have yearly Pap smears….with HPV testing.
