Can the HPV vaccine works after exposure?

by Rachel on May 4, 2011

I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend while I’ve had HPV for years. I feel very bad about that. This was 3 days ago. Can she still get the vaccin and avoid contracting the virus?

If you were exposed and caught the virus then no

If you were exposed but didn’t catch the virus then yes

The virus is a preventative vaccine. It doesn’t work as well if you have already been exposed to the virus…it can’t prevent something that she may have already acquired. Yes, she can get the vaccine even after being exposed to the viurs…but it may not prevent her from acquiring the virus.

They are two vaccine available Gardasil and Cervarix. Gardasil prevents HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. Cervarix prevents HPV types 16 and 18.

There is no real way to know 100% which HPV type you have or had. Most visible genital warts are due to HPV types 6 and 11. Other HPV types can cause visible genital warts. Many people with low risk HPV types also carries a co-infection to other HPV types.

Are you her first sex partner? If you are not she may have already been exposed to other HPV types.

Talking about the virus before sex would have been wise…it would elevate some of your bad feelings..she would have understood the risk…Here is one of the simple truths of love and sex in the modern world: You need to be willing to have frank, open discussions with your partner about all
matters relating to sex

They are side effects to the vaccine…read more about them…and then let her decide…she may receive some benefits from the vaccine if you are her first sex partner.

No the shot is to prevent it not to cure it. BUT the good thing is even though there is no cure for HPV if you are healthy your body can fight it off. I found out I had HPV at 16 when I got pregnant with my son and when I was 20 I got pregnant again and when they tested me I was negative for everything so I told the doc it had to be wrong because I had HPV and that’s when I learned that my body fought off the virus.
