The pap smear tests for abnormal cells, it does NOT test for HPV. HPV can eventually lead to abnormal changes and uterine cancer but the cancerous changes and the virus are two separate things that need different tests. Both you and your husband have probably been positive for more than 10 years. Many, many people are infected and never know it as there are rarely symptoms.
Congrats on the pregnancy!

Yes. This definitely can happen! It actually happens ALL THE TIME.

It could be that you would have tested positive for HPV all these years, but they never tested you. The pap smear tests for abnormal cells only, not HPV. A lot of doctors only do the HPV test if the pap comes back abnormal. It’s a pretty stupid policy if you ask me, but that’s what they do.

Also, pregnancy depresses your immune system, which could have possibly caused the HPV to reactivate. Hopefully after you have the baby, you immune system will kick back in and fight this off.

Yes! A pap smear does not show HPV. HPV is very common! Just typical warts are caused by HPV. I would not be too alarmed. Listen to your doctors orders and you will be fine. Most people’s body get rid of the HPV without outside help.
