could this minor detail had an effect on my hpv test?

by Rachel on May 5, 2011

I was diagnosed with hpv + for the first time and pap smear was negative. At the time of the test I had intercourse with my boyfriend within 24 hours.

I have often wondered if it would, but I would ask your OBGYN if it would. I don’t think so or I would think they would tell women before you come in for the test. You can still have normal pap smears even with HPV. It can lay dormant and rise up again later.

Our Pap test and our HPV test is sorta two different test. Our Pap test looks for abnormal cell changes…sometimes having sex the night before ‘might’ cause some abnormal cell changes…the most common Pap test is more sensitive and having sex the night before doesn’t have the same effect….having sex the night before could cause some irritation…this could show as abnormal cell changes.

When abnormal cell changes are seen a second part of the Pap is done….confirming that we have one of the high risk HPV types. The HPV test is standard for the gal 30 and up regardless of your pap test findings. The HPV test is screening for DNA of the virus The HPV test is confirming that you have the DNA of one of the 13 high risk HPV types.
Having sex the night before has no affect on your DNA HPV test.

A positive HPV test means that you have HPV on your cervix.
