A PAP test is part of a woman’s annual gynecological exam, when she is given a pelvic examination. The doctor scrapes cells from the woman’s cervix, which is the part of the uterus which extends into the very back of the vagina. The cells are sent to a lab where they are checked for abnormalities. This is the #1 way that cervical cancer is detected and also presence of the HPV. As far as men go, there is presently no regular test for HPV even though it is transmitted by sexual contact from either party. Only about 1 out of 100 men who are infected with the virus will develop genital warts, which are its primary manifestation. The best way to prevent the spread of HPV would be barrier contraceptives.

Unless you have genital warts or are having sex with someone who knows they are actively shedding the virus, there’s no reason you would think you have it. In other words, there aren’t any other symptoms, so why would you think so? There are 100 or so strains of HPV. Only a few cause warts or cancer. Once you’ve had sex, you have probably been exposed to some strain and your body will fight it off like any other virus. This is why it’s not routinely or easily tested. You can get a vaccine but it’s not routinely given to boys.
