How long can you have HPV before a pap smear detects it?

by Rachel on June 25, 2010

2 years ago I made my annual PAP, and he came back normal. And a year ago I had a different, and it came back normal. I had a colposcopy and biopsy, I tested positive for HPV. If I could before and the PAP had just not shown. . . How long does it usually occur on an abnormal Pap test?

HPV is cyclical, it may never be seen on a papsmear. If it goes into “remission” before you see your doctor there will be nothing to see. If you are sexually active, chances are you may have already contracted a strain (one of the 90% that leave no marks and cause no danger) and your body has since ousted it.

You can have it for years, decades even, before your pap would show abnormal. There is no time limit. Most women with HPV have normal paps.
