Annual pap was atypical (not quite “normal”) and HPV was tested positive. Last year, the PAP has been normal.Gibt there any way of knowing if the virus has more than a year? “Could there have been a few years ago, it would even cause atypical pap, or could it have just received in the past year? (New friend in the last year and before that was with the same partner for nearly 4 years if that matter)

Usually 1-3 years to detect HPV after the initial infection. However, it is more likely you got it from your new partner if you had been getting annual paps before.
it’s the new BF..
There’s always a possibility that the HPV escaped detection in a previous PAP. Who and when – may never be known.
The good news is that now you know it’s there, it can be treated and you can take precautions in the future, that help protect yourself and any intimate partner.
