how to teach STD to high school students in 30 – 40 min?

by Rachel on May 16, 2011

I need to do a teaching project to a group of 20 high school students that ranges from grade 9 to 12.
The students I will be teaching are “high risk group” — meaning.. they are youth that could be homeless, on probation, incarcerated in county facilities, temporarily in group homes..etc.

The topic I have to teach about is STD and I have about 30 to 40 minutes to teach.

I feel 30 to 40 min is really not enough time to cover all about STD.
Especially since there are so many to talk about..

how can i make it an informative and interesting session??

I thought about two ways to do it..
one.. is to pick the 5 common STD such as Chlamydia, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Human Papilloma Virus/HPV & HIV. discuss each separately –what they are, signs and symptoms, how it is transmitted & treatment. than move on to talk about prevention, and talk about available community resources they can get more info. or help on.

Or teach in orders like this..

What is STD
Difference between Bacterial / Virus caused STD
Common symptoms of all STD – mens & women
Distinguishable symptoms for each STD (show Pictures)
How is STD usually transmitted
Ways to prevent it
Community Resources

I am open to all suggestions.. I have no clue how to teach =(!!
such as interesting activities, effective teaching methods, what the presentation should include, how the presentation should go.. etc

any suggestions will help.

ps. yes, I have looked up online for sample lesson plans..etc..
but I am looking something more customized for the group of students I will be teaching to..

Hello Dan,

I don’t have any lesson plans but you may want to include that if any of your students, or any of their friends, are at risk for STD’s to get themselves tested.

This is a subject that really needs to be covered. Best of luck.
