by Rachel on January 28, 2010

but i always thought that you have the virus forever. im so confused now. i was always told that you could still spread it even if you dont have warts anymore, but then yesterday at my oppointment i asked about it and she told me that my immune system might have already got rid of the virus. she said that its harder to get rid of the virus if you smoke tho so i might still have it. what have you heard?

It is true that in MOST cases, a person’s immune system will get rid of HPV by itself. However, that is “most”, not “all”. Clearing HPV takes a variable amount of time – typically 6 to 24 months.
However, the minority of people who are unable to clear HPV infections may be at risk of developing cervical cancer if they are infected with particular strains – most commonly types 16 and 18, and a few other types as well.
I’m not sure about the effect of smoking on clearing the virus – although it is well known that smokers are significantly more prone to cervical cancer than non smokers.
The reason the HPV vaccine is recommended for all young women is that there is no way of knowing in advance who is going to be able to clear HPV infections naturally and who isn’t. HPV infections are extremely common. Nearly all sexually active people get them. They cause potentially serious problems in only a small minority, but the problems are so serious that it’s worth vaccinating everyone, even though most people wouldn’t get cervical cancer from the virus.
It’s just that we don’t know beforehand who will and who won’t.

It is very seldom that your immune system will get rid of the virus. Once you have the herpes virus, that’s it, for life.
Waiting for your immune system to get rid of it is like waiting for a train in the middle of an ocean.

I would absolutely get rid of that gynecologist and refuse to pay the bill. They obviously need to do some reading on HPV.
Some types of HPV don’t even have symptoms (or warts).
Ask our doctor this….
If it’s true that your immune system gets rid of the virus, then why would they work so hard to come up with a vaccine for it?

Yes I had HPV about 4 years ago and after i had my daughter it magicly disapeared. I have been HPV free for 2 1/2 years…So yes your body can eventually get rid of the virus.. And the vaccine is for Cancer not HPV…
