My pap smear detected HPV, what will this mean for my life?

by Rachel on August 14, 2011

I just got the results from my pap and it detected hpv, so I have to go into the doctor for further testing. I’m just wondering what kind of changes I will have to make to my life. How will this affect my boyfriend? What are the ways I can transmit it to other people? Will this affect my ability to have children someday? Please help! I’m confused and really scared.

First relax. If you tested positive on your cervix, you likely won’t have any symptoms. The human papilloma virus is contagious but it depends on what strain of it you have. You should find that out. I have a form of it..don’t remember which one, that wasn’t sexually transmitted, and is not contagious. I hope this helps and don’t worry, I’ve had it for 16 years and I have 5 kids. No problems for me.

My sister tested positive for HPV about a year ago and she was pregnant at the time. The doctor told her that it would not effect the baby and that they would do more testing on her once she had the baby. She had the baby, I have an adorable niece who is nothing less than perfect and when my sister went back in to be checked her test results came back negative for HPV. So I asked my doctor about it and she told me that more than 50% of women will get HPV before they are 50 and that MOST of the time the body will basically cleanse itself of it just like any other infection. She said that was probably the case with my sister and that now that she has had it her body has built anti-bodies against it so she doesn’t have to worry about getting that type again. My doctor also said that males are typically the carriers of it but there is no way to test them for it.

I know that is really scary news but you should try and relax (easier said than done right?) and just wait until you speak to your doctor. Until then just keep in mind that a lot of women get it and never have any problems related to it. Good luck sweetie!

i have hpv. high risk. it hasn’t affected my life much. At first it did since i was kind of stressed out and depressed but i learn to face the reality and live with it. I felt so guilty because i think im the one who had it and gave it to my bf (3 years i believe my ex is the one who infected me. Well at the beginning i would affect me ffinanciallysince i had to miss work or leave early for doctor aappointmentand all the test are pretty expensive (thank god that i have insurance). I had a procedure called LEEP. It scrapes off the bad cells. I had that done and ccouldn’thave sex for 3 weeks. After those 3 weeks it hurt when i would have sex (since my bf would go deep and hurt my cervix) i would bleed sometime since i wwasn’tccompletelyhhealedtill like 3 months. My life is the same. Im pretty sure my bf is infected so we ddon’tuse protection (but we should). Just remember to use protection in order not to infect any one else.
