What are the statistical probablities of contracting an STD between races?

by Rachel on April 1, 2011

Someone once told me that africans have a much higher probablity of contacting a STD if you have sexual intercourse with them as opposed to whites.

I was wondering if this person was being racist of if there’s any truth, if so, do you have any stats on this?

There is a higher proportion of HIV among blacks than among whites in the United States.

If you use a condom and avoid having sex with intravenous drug users, you will substantially reduce your risk.

I doubt the veracity of this statement, I’m sure if you looked close enough you could find marginal differences, but fundamentally there is no difference in the physiology of a white or black (aside from the amount of melanin in their skin) person. You either have an STD or you don’t. The statistics don’t lie, but the way people spin them can be misleading. For example, if you surveyed all inner city blacks, and then surveyed upper middle class whites, you will definitely find a significant difference. But that is not due to skin color, that is due to social stratification. So I’m just going to say, that they looked a study that was either very flawed, or not broad enough. (I’m just making a point, I do not think all blacks live in the inner city or that all whites are upper middle class)

I do not believe your friend is correct.
I do think the incidence of STDs is higher in blacks, but that’s not the same thing.
It’s not a physiological thing, it’s a subcultural one.

Well more Africans have HIV (seriously, it is bad in some countries) and in the U.S. black people have a higher incidence of HIV than whites. I don’t know about other STD’s but there is some weak support for the claim. Google HIV rates by country and you should find data on this. Still, you are more likely to catch an STD from a white person with high risk factors like having multiple sexual partners, infrequent condom use, and intravenous drug use than a black person that doesn’t. Remember, no bag no tag.

0% in most cases, for most people.
