Where can my boyfriend get tested for HPV?

by Rachel on April 9, 2011

We live in central Ohio. Most places which test for STDs do not offer HPV testing for men. I know that HPV testing is available for men because I had a friend from Brazil who was able to get tested there. It must also be available in the U.S….I just am not sure where. Thank you so much for your help!

If you are positive for HPV and you’ve had unprotected sex with your boyfriend, then it is almost certain that he will be positive also. However, some men never contract the disease. It may be that their immune systems are just able to fight it off. As far as getting him tested, most clinics that test for STDs should be able to test for HPV also. Have you tried your local Planned Parenthood? I would also call your states “411″ line. In Wisconsin its called First Call For Help and they have a huge database of local numbers for just about everything. Lastly, you could try calling your insurance carrier and asking them, just the same as you might call them to find out where to go for specialized testing for other things.

“Currently, there is no test designed or approved to find HPV in men. The only approved HPV test on the market is for women, for use as part of cervical cancer screening. There is no general test for men or women to check one’s overall “HPV status.”” –Center for Disease Control website

Go to Brazil? I don’t know–I’m doubtful of that Brazilian guy’s information…

Here in the US there is no standard FDA approved HPV test for the male.

A male is usually diagnosed by visual warts. Many times men carry the virus with no signs or symptoms of the virus. A doctor may use a vinegar/acid wrap to see small flat warts but this is not an HPV test…it is just an aid in the visual.

They are clinical trails here and in other countries that are experimenting with testing the male for HPV but as of right now there is not a standard test used here in the US.

There is currently no FDA-approved test to detect HPV in men. That is because an effective, reliable way to collect a sample of male genital skin cells, which would allow detection of HPV, has yet to be developed.

REMEMBER: HPV is very common in men and women. Most men with HPV will never develop health problems from it. Finding out if you have HPV is not as important as finding out if you have the diseases that it can cause. Scientists are still studying how best to screen for penile and anal cancers in men who may be at highest risk for those diseases (see below).

This is a company that offers an HPV test for the male. You purchase the test…do lots of research before you spend the couple of hundred dollars for the test.

There is probably other HPV test for the male that is available…but at this time none have met FDA approval…so you will probably not find health centers doing the test or coverage under insurance.
